This 2,000-year-old wine, world’s oldest was found buried in…; It belonged to..

The world’s oldest wine was discovered in Carmona, Spain. This archaeological find, estimated to be around 2,000 years old, was uncovered in a Roman tomb.

According to reports, the wine was preserved in a sealed glass urn. Germany previously held the record for the oldest wine bottle, dating back to the 4th century.

In 2019, during the renovation of the tomb, the wine was found along with clothes, glassware and jewellery. The wine was kept in the sealed urn so it could be protected from leaks and environmental damage.

Professor José Rafael Ruiz Arrebola, Chemist of University of Cordoba, corroborated after a detailed analysis that the urn carrying liquid is wine. His findings are published in the Journal of Archaeological Science.

The discovery has amazed researchers, who are intrigued by how the liquid was preserved for so many centuries. The wine was found beside a man, suggesting it was part of a funerary ritual.

Chemical analysis revealed that while the wine had decayed, it was strikingly similar to Spanish sherry and fino wines. The wine contains polyphenols, natural antioxidants, but there is no evidence to suggest it was red wine. It is likely a white wine.
