The Royal Family’s Year-End Recap Included One Iconic Selfie of Princess Charlotte & Prince George
It turns out, even royalty thinks of Taylor Swift as a princess. The Grammy-winning pop star was included in the British Royal Family’s year-end recap post today in a selfie with Prince William and his eldest children Prince George, 11, and Princess Charlotte, 9, who he shares with wife Kate Middleton. (Their youngest son Prince Louis, 6, unfortunately — but understandably! — missed out.) The iconic moment is clearly something the royals are still thinking about months later!
“2024 ✅ Happy New Year! Wishing you all a wonderful 2025 ✨,” the official Prince and Princess of Wales Instagram account posted. They shared a photo carousel full of memorable moments from the last 12 months, including the heartwarming family photo taken from a September video that marked the end of Middleton’s chemotherapy treatment, a picture that they also used as a Christmas card.
Other slides include the family’s video of Middleton’s cancer journey update, pictures and videos of various royal appearances, a photo of the Waleses with their three kids during the annual Together at Christmas Carol Service, and so much more. But the photo that stuck with us the most was on slide 17, featuring “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” singer herself!
Swift leans in to take a selfie with William, Prince George, and Princess Charlotte in this now-iconic photo backstage at one of her Eras Tour concerts in London over the summer. Swift holds up her phone in her “The Man” black glittery blazer as the family smiles in the background. No one looks happier than Princess Charlotte, though, who looks absolutely elated to meet Swift with a huge wide-open smile. She’s even dressed in a sparkly gold dress, likely referencing Swift’s Fearless era.
In the year-end recap from the royals, this selfie photo is super-imposed on another photo of Swift. This one appears to have been taken by one of the royals themselves, as it shows Swift mid-performance of “The Man” from an angle that looks like it was from the audience. Now this could just be a stock photo, but considering that the royals are big fans, we’re pretty sure it’s one they took.
“Princess Charlotte’s smile with Taylor Swift is the best! ❤️” one person commented. Another wrote, “That photo is sheer joy. I love it so much!!!”
“I love that Taylor made the cut ????” someone else joked.
By the way, this isn’t the only photo of the royals with Swift. The “Karma” singer hard-launched her relationship with boyfriend Travis Kelce in another selfie from backstage, this one with Kelce posing next to William as Swift snaps the photo. “Happy Bday M8! London shows are off to a splendid start ????????????????????” she captioned the photo in June.
Kelce’s brother Jason Kelce also got to meet the royals at the show, which he opened up about in an episode of his New Heights podcast. “I gotta say, Prince William was fantastic, but the highlight was Princess Charlotte,” the former NFL player said, adding that George “was great too” but his sister was just “so f*cking adorable.”
“I cannot express how … I don’t know, maybe it’s because I have three girls now — she had fire to her, she was asking questions,” Jason said. “That was the most electric part of [meeting the royals].”
Travis added, “I love it when parents ask their kids to be vocal,” prompting Jason to reply, “They encourage them to lead in a conversation — absolutely.” Jason also called it “such a good parent move.”
“[He] let them have a moment, let them feel comfortable in talking to people … If anyone’s doing it right, Prince William’s doing it right,” Travis continued. “So thank you, Your Royal Highness. It was awesome meeting you, and Charlotte and George.”
The royals also kept a souvenir from the concert, as they have all three been spotted wearing friendship bracelets. Prince William wore a blue-beaded bracelet that spelled “Papa” at the Earthshot Prize Awards in Cape Town, South Africa, in November. He explained, per Express, “This is a relic, if you like, from a Taylor Swift concert that my daughter decided that she wanted to create a bracelet for. She gave it to me when I came away. So I promised to wear it and try not to lose while I was out here.”
Princess Charlotte was also spotted wearing her own friendship bracelet during the Christmas Day walk at Sandringham, and Prince George wore won during his official 11th birthday portrait. It’s clear they are huge Swifties, and we love to see it!
