Who is Edin Terzic? The man rumoured to be replacing Postecoglou at Spurs
It has been suggested that Tottenham could turn to Edin Terzic to replace Ange Postecoglou. If that is the case, Spurs will be getting an enthusiastic, young coach with progressive ideas, but one who does not have a lot of experience to lean on in the top job.
Explosive claim made about Tottenham’s managerial search
While reports in the British press have continued to maintain that Tottenham are not thinking about sacking Ange Postecoglou for now, this was contradicted by Besiktas presidential candidate Serdal Adali, who made an explosive revelation last week.
Adali revealed that he contacted former Borussia Dortmund head coach, Edin Terzic, about joining the Turkish club, but the German informed him that he expects to join Tottenham.
While we would have to wait and see if there is any truth to the assertion, the appointment of the German, while being exciting, could potentially prove to be another gamble by the Lilywhites.
Who is Edin Terzic and what is his coaching journey?
Like many top-level managers in the modern game, Terzic had an unimpressive playing career, spending most of his time as a professional playing in the lower leagues in Germany.
He called time early on his playing career to concentrate on coaching, and that has proven to be an extremely fruitful choice.
The 42-year-old first worked as a scout and a youth coach at Dortmund from 2010 to 2013, reporting to Jurgen Klopp at the time.
He then got a chance to work as an assistant to Slaven Bilic, being part of the Croat’s staff at Besiktas from 2013 to 2015 before following him to West Ham United, where he spent another two years.
Terzic returned to Borussia Dortmund in 2018 as an assistant coach of the first team after the appointment of Lucien Favre as coach. He took charge of the team on an interim basis when Favre was sacked in December 2020, guiding the club to the DFB-Pokal trophy during that spell.
When the Bundesliga side appointed Marco Rose as their head coach before the start of the 2021-22 season, Terzic moved into the technical director role, which he held for one season.
Following Rose’s departure at the end of that season, he was appointed as the full-time head coach by Dortmund, holding the role for two full seasons until last summer.
In the 2022-23 season, he came within an inch of leading Dortmund to the Bundesliga title, with the club ultimately losing the title to Bayern Munich on goal difference.
Last season, Terzic guided the club to a fifth-place finish in the league and to the final of the Champions League, where they were beaten 2-0 by Real Madrid, with the German coach leaving the club at his own request after the final.
What is Edin Terzic’s preferred style of play?
Terzic prefers setting up his side in a 4-3-3, with one midfield pivot and two number eights, who often occupy the half-spaces.
He also occasionally uses a 4-2-3-1, and favours a possession-based approach, with Dortmund averaging 58 per cent possession in his first full season.
According to Coach’s Voice, Terzic prefers a build-up using a back four, using expansive full-backs who often combine with the number eights to help beat the opposition’s press.
However, the website explains that when coming up against higher-quality and more aggressive opposition, the German has shown pragmatism and willingness to play on the counterattack, as Dortmund often did in their run to the Champions League final last season.
