DWI crackdown on Long Island for New Year’s holiday

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (PIX11) – Suffolk and Nassau County police are enhancing patrols to crack down on people driving under the influence during the holiday.

Both police departments have announced that they will have more officers patrolling the roadways throughout New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

“They are closing the year strong with enhanced DWI enforcement during this critical time so we can all safely celebrate the holidays with friends and family,” said Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr.

Over in Nassau, officials say they will be utilizing grant funds from the Special Traffic Options Program for Driving While Impaired. The program, created by the New York State Legislature in 1981, is funded by fines paid by convicted drunken drivers, according to its website.

Fines for DWI can range from $300 to $10,000 along with court surcharges that can range from $260 for a violation to $520 for a felony offense, as outlined by the New York State Police.

Those convicted of DWI can have their license suspended for six months for their first offense. Licenses can be revoked for the following offenses.
