Death toll climbs to 15 after truck plows into New Orleans revelers: coroner
The death toll climbed to 15 in what authorities were investigating Wednesday as a terrorist attack in New Orleans.
Authorities said Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, of Texas, drove into a crowd on Bourbon Street in the city's famed French Quarter early on New Year's Day.
At least 15 people died, according to an update Wednesday evening from city Coroner Dr. Dwight McKenna, rising from 10 announced earlier in the afternoon. Dozens were also wounded in the attack.
"We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that unfolded in the French Quarter. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the victims, their families, and everyone affected,” McKenna said in a statement, according to CNN.
McKenna said his office is working with local and federal authorities.

“We remain committed to supporting the community during this tragic time in our city,” he said.
Authorities said the pickup truck had an ISIS flag attached to its hitch and they do not believe he acted alone. Jabbar previously served in the U.S. Army, according to reports.
He got out of the vehicle during the attack and shot at law enforcement agents, who returned fire, killing him, FBI officials said. Two officers were wounded in the shootout and were taken to hospitals.
Additionally, weapons and explosives were found in the truck as well as in the French quarter.
