Two dead, one arrested after multi-car crash in southwest Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- Two people have died and another has been arrested after a multi-car crash in southwest Columbus on New Year's Day.

Authorities responded to the scene at Alkire and Norton roads at 12:55 a.m. on Wednesday where they found a Hyundai Elantra stopped and disabled in the middle of the intersection, according to the Columbus Division of Police. The Hyundai had been involved in a non-injury crash and the occupants, 56-year-old Keith Klatt and 53-year-old Joellen Klatt, were standing beside the car.

The two were exchanging information with the driver of the other car involved when a Dodge Dakota pickup truck approached the intersection from the west. The truck hit the Hyundai, along with striking Keith and Joellen.

Keith was pronounced dead at the scene at 1 a.m., while Joellen was transported to a local hospital in critical condition then pronounced dead at 1:42 a.m. Police said one person was arrested for operating a vehicle while impaired.
