122356 condom packets delivered by Blinkit for New Year parties, here’s what Indians ordered most on December 31

The year 2025 has begun, and people worldwide welcomed it in their unique ways. In India, the New Year was celebrated with great enthusiasm, with families and friends coming together, as house parties took the center stage on New Year’s eve. Many Indians turned to online platforms for shopping during the celebrations. Quick e-commerce app Blinkit experienced a surge in orders starting the evening of December 31. Blinkit CEO Albinder Dhindsa shared some intriguing statistics about the most-ordered items on the platform that night.

Blinkit delivered 1,22,356 packs of condoms

Blinkit, a subsidiary of food delivery app Zomato, delivered 1,22,356 packs of condoms during the New Year’s celebrations. According to Albinder Dhindsa, the most-ordered item was potato chips, with 2,34,512 packs sold. Condoms were the second most-ordered item. Mineral water ranked third, with 45,531 bottles ordered. PartySmart capsules secured the fourth spot, with 22,322 orders. Other notable orders included 6,834 packs of ice cubes, 2,434 sachets of Eno, 1,003 lipsticks, and 762 lighters.

Blinkit also experienced a massive surge in demand for grapes on New Year’s Eve. By 7 PM on Tuesday, an unprecedented spike in grape orders caused the fruit to go out of stock, with the platform delivering seven times the usual quantity.

The quick commerce platform delivered approximately 2,34,512 packets of aloo bhujiya, 45,531 cans of tonic water, and nearly 7,000 packs of ice cubes. Additionally, over 1,000 lipsticks and 262 lighters were purchased by users by 8 PM that evening.

A record-breaking night for Blinkit

Albinder Dhindsa highlighted that December 31 was a landmark day for Blinkit. It recorded the highest number of orders ever received, with peak orders per minute and per hour. Additionally, delivery partners earned the highest tips that day. Blinkit reported delivering 2.3 lakh packets of aloo bhujia by 8 PM on December 31, 2024. In Hyderabad, a delivery partner received a record Rs. 2,500 as a single tip. Moreover, Blinkit saw its largest single order worth Rs. 64,988 placed from Kolkata.

“Just some of the milestones we hit on Blinkit today – highest ever orders in a day, highest OPM (orders per minute), highest OPH (orders per hour), highest total tips given to delivery partners in a day, most chips sold in a day, most grapes sold in a day. Thank you for ordering and placing your trust in us, India! Happy new year everyone,” Albinder wrote.

In a seperate post on X, Dhindsa mentioned that Bengalureans topped the list of cities which shelled out the maximum of amount of tips given to delivery partners of Blinkit, with a whopping Rs 1,79,735 in total.”Someone from Hyderabad just gave the highest tip of the day (Rs 2500) to one of our delivery partners! And the city which has tipped the most today is Bengaluru with a total of Rs 1,79,735 in tips,” he revealed.

Noticing an upward trend of lemon orders on his platform hours before midnight on New Year’s eve, Dhindsa wondered whether the country’s party people were gearing up for some tequila shots!”Nimboo orders spiking right now! Is it officially tequila time?” he posted on X.

The last day of 2024 proved to be record-breaking not only for Blinkit but also for other quick commerce and food delivery platforms. On Swiggy Instamart, the demand for ice peaked around 7 PM, with 119 kilograms delivered in Mumbai alone. Bengaluru and Hyderabad also ranked among the top cities preparing for chilled drinks, surpassing Chennai, which still managed to double its usual ice orders on the platform.
