Pens Points: Heading South

It was a mostly quiet New Years Day from the Penguins, but Pens Points is still here in case you missed anything.

It will be another day before the Pittsburgh Penguins open the 2025 portion of their 2024-25 schedule as they head to the Sunshine State for a meeting with the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers tomorrow night. Before hopping on a plane bound for Florida, the Penguins remained in Detroit on New Year’s Day for a practice session.

Sidney Crosby turned 37 in 2024, but that did not stop him from putting together another history setting calendar year. While the Penguins may not have found the success they were hoping for, the captain showed no signs of slowing down. [Pensburgh]

NHL News and Notes...

It’s a massive day at the 2025 World Junior Championships with all four quarterfinal games set for action. The United States will faceoff against Switzerland at 2:30 PM then the hosts Canada will look to book a semifinal spot when they take on Czechia. [NHL]

Now that we have reached the quarter mark of the 21st century, the NHL is marking the occasion by naming quarter century teams for all franchises. They began on New Years Even with the Winter Classic teams, now moved on to the defunct Arizona Coyotes. [NHL]
