Americans optimistic about Trump’s ability to control immigration: Gallup

Americans are optimistic that President-elect Trump will be able to control immigration, a new survey found.

The poll, conducted by Gallup, found that 68 percent of U.S. adults predict Trump will control illegal immigration into the country.

Twenty-eight percent of respondents don’t think Trump will be able to control illegal immigration, and 4 percent have no opinion on the matter.

It’s the area in which survey respondents have the brightest outlook for Trump's second term.

Out of 17 questions about Trump's ability to accomplish various policy goals, he garnered at least 50 percent confidence on eight of them.

Sixty percent believe the president-elect will reduce employment and keep the U.S. safe from terrorism. Fifty-eight percent believe he will improve the economy, and 55 percent say he will keep the U.S. out of war.

A majority of Americans also believe Trump will cut taxes and reduce crime rates, and half expect he will increase respect for the U.S. abroad, the survey found.

Meanwhile, 33 percent of Americans say Trump will heal political divisions in the country, and 41 percent say he will improve race relations.

Gallup noted that partisanship strongly influences how Americans feel about Trump’s upcoming presidency. Most Republicans are optimistic he will reach each of the 17 goals, while Democrats are skeptical on nearly all of them.

More Americans believe Trump will succeed in his immigration plans than they did for any other president evaluated in Gallup’s history.

The survey was conducted Dec. 2-18 among 1,003 adults and has a margin of error or 4 percentage points.
