Multnomah County Library unveils most checked-out books of 2024

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Books that became popular among Multnomah County readers last year have also been praised by the New York Times and former President Barack Obama.

On New Year’s Eve, Multnomah County Library revealed a list of its most-checked out novels for 2024. For adults, the top physical book was James McBride’s “The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.”

The historical fiction novel is set in a Pennsylvania neighborhood that was home to immigrant, Jewish and Black communities through the 20th century. Released in 2023, the book landed on Obama’s list of favorites and sold more than one million copies in less than a year.

“Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow” by Gabrielle Zevin was the top digital title for adult readers, in part because it was selected for Multnomah County Library’s “Everybody Reads” program.

The 2022 novel follows the story of childhood friends who launch a famous video game studio together. The book received many accolades, including a spot on the New York Times’ list of the best books of the 21st century.

For local kids, “Mary Anne’s Bad Luck Mystery” by Cynthia Yuan Cheng was named the top physical book. The graphic novel is based on the original novel by Ann M. Martin, and one of several books in the iconic “The Baby-Sitters Club” series.

Jeff Kinney’s “No Brainer” was the top digital kids’ book for 2024. The book is one of the latest installments of the best-selling author’s 19-title “Diary Of a Wimpy Kid” series.

Multnomah County Library also revealed its staff’s roundup of best books for all ages. In no particular order, the roundup includes “A Love Song for Ricki Wilde” by Tia Williams and “Bride” by Ali Hazelwood.

“If you didn’t get around to these excellent reads last year, there’s always 2025,” the library said of its most-borrowed books. “We hope you take some TBR inspiration from this selection of what the readers around you are enjoying. Here's to a season filled with good books and good company!”
