What Kansas counties are under a winter storm watch for this weekend?
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Meteorologists are warning residents of northeast Kansas to strong wind gusts, sleet and whiteout conditions head of an approaching winter storm set to hit the area this weekend.
27 News Chief Stormtrack Meteorologist posted a warning regarding the upcoming winter storm on Jan. 1 which is expected to impact much of the northeast Kansas area and other parts of the state from Saturday, Jan. 4 to Sunday, Jan. 5. People should expect travel delays as a cold front arrives Thursday night, bringing with it colder air which will bring temperatures into the 30-degree range by Friday, Jan. 3.
27 News meteorologist Ashton Rizzo reported on Jan. 2 that single-digit wind chills are expected by Sunday, Jan. 5. People should be prepared for both snow and ice across Kansas.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has multiple counties under a winter storm watch throughout central, eastern and northeastern Kansas. An NWS alert posted at 2:25 p.m. on Jan. 2 warns that a wintry mix is expected with snow accumulations between four and 11 inches. People should also expect 50 mph wind gusts, sleet and whiteout conditions.
"Roads will likely become slick and hazardous. Whiteout conditions are possible and may make travel treacherous if not impossible and potentially life-threatening. Power outages and tree damage are likely due to snow, ice and strong wind gusts."
