DEC: How to recycle electronics, batteries for free
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Many people's New Year's resolutions may include keeping their spaces cleaner, so why not get rid of those electronics in your home collecting dust and taking up space or those batteries sitting in your junk drawer? The Department of Environmental Conservation has got you covered with ways to recycle these items.
For recycling electronics, there are two options. First, you can use the DEC's list of electronic equipment manufacturers registered in New York to find manufacturers and their electronic waste acceptance programs. Second, you can go to an electronic waste collection site.
The DEC's list has links to waste acceptance program websites and toll-free numbers to call for information. Manufacturers that are of covered electronic equipment (CEE) must offer free and convenient opportunities to recycle their equipment brands, according to the DEC.
The second option of going to an electronic waste collection site is another accessible way to recycle your electronics. The DEC has compiled a list of registered sites in New York sorted by county online.
Be sure to call ahead before going to one of these collection sites as the site you choose may not accept your particular electronic and could result in being charged a fee. The easiest way to ensure you can recycle your electronics for free is by following the manufacturer takeback program.
When it comes to recycling batteries, they do not belong in your garbage or recycling bin. If the battery is rechargeable, you can bring them back to the store where you bought them, or just a store that sells them, at no charge.
Single-use batteries can be recycled at Staples stores or you can find a drop-off location in your area by searching online.
