Why did Josh disappear and why did he emerge 11 years later?
Kat’s fiance Josh disappeared from her life without a trace 11 years ago while she was mourning the death of her father. When she sees him on a dating app, she decides to match with him, but after sending the first message, he replies and says that it’s not a good idea for them to talk and he mutes her profile.
We eventually learn that it wasn’t Josh on the profile at all. A crime organization used his photos on a catfish account to lure unsuspecting people.
While investigating Josh’s whereabouts, Kat discovers an archived Facebook account for him and learns that it was set up by a young girl. She’s led to the home of the girl and eventually learns that this is Josh’s daughter, who created him a profile to try and find love for him.
So, why did Josh disappear? It all has to do with the death of Kat’s father.
How did Kat’s dad really die?
Monte Leburne had confessed to the murder of Clint Donovan and he’s in his final days of life amid a battle with cancer. Kat goes to meet with him in hopes of learning why he really killed her dad. She finds out that he wasn’t Clint’s killer at all and he actually was paid to take the fall for someone else.
So, who is Clint’s real killer?
We find out that Clint had a secret gay relationship with a man named Parker. Kat’s friend Aqua caught them sharing an embrace and Clint went to Aqua’s home to beg her not to tell Kat about his affair.
Aqua tells Clint she won’t say anything, but tells him that he needs to tell his family about his affair. Clint sees Aqua getting a phone call from Kat and becomes aggressive as he’s under the assumption that Aqua said something to her already. They end up in a physical fight involving a knife.
Josh arrives and tries to break up the fight, but he accidentally stabs Clint.
Kat’s boss and Clint’s partner Stagger arrives at the scene just as Clint is about to die. In his final words Clint asks them all to cover up his death to hide the truth from Kat.
Josh disappeared from Kat’s life because he wasn’t sure how to face her every day while keeping this secret from her. Stagger got Monte Leburne to take the fall for the murder as part of the cover-up.
In the end, we’re left with the implication that Kat and Josh may rekindle their relationship. We see Kat reaching toward Josh, but we don’t know that they’re definitely a couple again.
Here’s what Rosalind Eleazar said about that twist!
Rosalind told TheWrap, “There’s a lot going on for her, it is relentless. I couldn’t believe it when I read the book and that final chapter about what happens. I didn’t think that’s where the story was going to go. It’s interesting to know whether people think that they will end up together in the end. It’s really heavy. I don’t think you can get more traumatic or dramatic than that.”
Rosalind was asked if Kat will ever tell her mom the truth about Clint‘s murder.
“I don’t think she probably would tell her mother. But then is she just going to hold on to this with him? I don’t know that [Kat and Josh] will end up together. I don’t know that you could get past that,” she said.
So, what did that final moment with Kat and Josh mean?
“That was a really hard scene to shoot. Both Ashley and I were shattered by the end of that day because it was so heavy,” she told Tudum. “There’s something quite nice about her reaching toward him in the end. I think you could read that in many ways.”
