NJ Amtrak passenger in police custody, had multiple guns on train: Authorities
NEW JERSEY (PIX11) – A man is in police custody after boarding a New Jersey Amtrak train headed to Virginia while carrying multiple firearms Friday afternoon, police said.
At around 3:00 p.m. New Jersey police were notified of an unattended bag at Newark-Penn Station. Police say they inspected the bag and discovered a handgun and loaded rifle.
Authorities said they investigated and determined that the unknown individual had purchased an Amtrack ticket for a final stop in Virginia. When the train made a scheduled stop in Trenton, NJ, the individual was placed in police custody.
The man resisted arrest, police said.
Police say the male suspect had three handguns and two more rifles in his possession.
A K9 unit swept and cleared the Amtrak train, police said.
It remains unclear why the suspect had so many firearms. Other details were not provided.
An investigation remains ongoing, authorities said.
