Ange Postecoglou made big blunder from day one at Tottenham – Journalist

Journalist Ian Ladyman believes that a decision that Ange Postecoglou made at the start of his Spurs tenure is coming back to haunt him, suggesting that the Tottenham head coach is now looking lonely on the touchline.

Ange Postecoglou does things his own way at Tottenham

Postecoglou is clearly a maverick among managers and certainly does not feel the need to follow the conventional norms.

That is not just true of his tactics, messages to the Spurs squad, and comments to the media but also extends to other parts of his management.

One of the many ways he is different is that the Australian does not have a fixed backroom team that he takes from club to club, with the 59-year-old hiring a new set of staff at every club.

That is the case at Tottenham too, with Postecoglou having never worked with Matt Wells, Ryan Mason, Mile Jedinak, Nick Montgomery and Sergio Raimundo previously.

Journalist says Postecoglou does not have a trusted ally

The Daily Mail’s Ian Ladyman has remarked that while Postecoglou’s methods of working with new people might have worked at previous clubs, it has exposed him in the cauldron that is the Premier League.

He suggested that the Tottenham head coach would have benefited from having a trusted voice beside who he can lean on and who understands the way he works.

The journalist wrote: “Postecoglou never takes staff from club to club with him. He never has done. For example, he won five trophies in two seasons in Scotland with Celtic but chose to leave his winning formula behind when he came to England.

“Few would doubt Postecoglou’s courage or his individuality. Both are admirable. But this is not some kind of social experiment platform, it’s the Premier League. The more you look at the Tottenham manager looking stressed agitated and a little lonely on the touchline and in post-match interviews, the more you wonder whether he would benefit from someone standing next to him who really knows him, can judge his moods and choose which of his buttons to press and when.

“None of this is to denigrate Tottenham’s coaching staff, a group of young men with different backgrounds. Postecoglou chose them when he arrived at the club and he may point out that we would not be having this conversation if his team was winning. But Spurs are not winning anywhere near enough, so it’s fair that every little piece of what he does is under scrutiny.

“Football’s past is littered with great managerial partnerships and we know who they are. And though things have changed since the days of the Liverpool boot room, certain principles have endured. That Postecoglou chooses to stand almost alone does make him different.

“His is a model that has worked for him wherever he has been. He is a serial winner. But the Premier League is a uniquely challenging environment and it’s hard not to look at him at times and wonder if he would not benefit from a tried and trusted ally standing right behind him.”

Postecoglou is right to stick to his methods

All leaders have their own style which works for them, and working with fresh faces and ideas is something that has served Postecoglou well through his career.

It would not been right for the 59-year-old to suddenly abandon that approach at Spurs, given that those methods are what got him here.
