‘Hacks’ just accomplished something only one other show has done at the Golden Globes

Hacks is back on top at the Golden Globes. The reigning Best Comedy Series Emmy champ won the Globe equivalent, Best Comedy/Musical Series, for the second time on Sunday — and in doing so, it joined an elite club.

The Max series is now the second show after All in the Family to reclaim the comedy/musical series prize after suffering a loss. Nine other shows have won the category more than once, but they all scored their awards in consecutive years: two-time champs The Carol Burnett Show (1970-71), Barney Miller (1976-77), Fame (1983-84), Ally McBeal (1998-99), Desperate Housewives (2005-06), and Glee (2010-11); and three-time champs Taxi (1979-81), The Golden Girls (1986-88), and Sex and the City (2000-02).

All in the Family, the sole four-time champ, won three in a row from 1972-74 and once more in 1978 with two losses in between (it had an additional nomination in 1979). Hacks prevailed for its first season in 2022 — when the ceremony was not televised — and lost the following year to Abbott Elementary. It was not eligible last year when The Bear won. Abbott and The Bear were in contention this year, along with Nobody Wants This, Only Murders in the Building, and The Gentlemen.

That so few shows are able to win again after a loss is not surprising as the now defunct Hollywood Foreign Press Association adored new shows, and once it was done with you, it was done with you for good. The new Golden Globe Foundation, established in 2023, boasts 300-plus voting members, way up from the 90-ish in the HFPA, so old patterns might be broken.

With 69/20 odds, Hacks was the overwhelming favorite to triumph, no doubt bolstered by its shocking Best Comedy Series Emmy win over The Bear in September. What also gave Hacks an edge was that, unlike at the Emmys, where its acclaimed third season competed against The Bear’s acclaimed second season, its Season 3 faced The Bear’s polarizing Season 3 at the Globes.

Just like in 2022, Hacks also won Best Comedy/Musical Actress for Jean Smart, who is now the seventh person to win the category twice. Its third nomination was for Hannah Einbinder in TV supporting actress, who lost to Baby Reindeer‘s Jessica Gunning.
