'Stop that!' MAGA melts down as GOP lawmaker thanks Capitol Police on Jan. 6 anniversary

Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) faced backlash after marking the anniversary of the Jan. 6 riots by thanking law enforcement for protecting lawmakers.

In a Monday post on X, Fitzpatrick acknowledged the fourth anniversary of the riot.

"On the fourth anniversary of January 6th, we pause to honor the remarkable courage and sacrifice of the United States Capitol Police and all who defended our Capitol that day," the Pennsylvania Republican wrote. "Their courage in the face of danger upheld the ideals of our nation and reminded us of the profound cost of defending freedom."

"We owe these brave men and women, as well as all our nation's law enforcement officers, a debt of gratitude we can never fully repay, but we can honor their service and sacrifice by reaffirming our commitment to upholding and protecting the democracy they so valiantly defended," he added.

While some commenters thanked Fitzpatrick for his remarks, he also received criticism from both sides of the political spectrum.

MAGA supporter Rick Denu responded with a middle finger, while David Mortimer accused the lawmaker of being a "RINO" (Republican in name only).

"Sir, I think it's time for you to find another line of work," he insisted.

"This is a really stupid post. Signed, one of your constituents," another MAGA supporter wrote.

"Stop that!" one commenter demanded. "It's over. Move on. Have you ever honored all the police and secret service who defended all federal buildings, including the president, during the BLM riots? Or his inauguration. JUST STOP!"

At least one left-leaning account noted that Fitzpatrick had declined to vote to impeach then-President Donald Trump for inciting the riot.

"You say this now, but didn't step up to make sure an election denier was impeached. So weak. How will we survive with a GOP beholden to a narcissistic autocrat? That only wants what benefits him and his billionaire sidekick Elon," the commenter said.
