'Make Greenland Great Again': Trump dispatches son on mission to 'magnificent' island

President-elect Donald Trump is not backing down from his fixation on the idea of the United States acquiring Greenland — and announced he plans to send his son on a visit to the island.

In a post to his Truth Social account on Monday, Trump proclaimed, "I am hearing that the people of Greenland are 'MAGA.' My son, Don Jr, and various representatives, will be traveling there to visit some of the most magnificent areas and sights. Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation. We will protect it, and cherish it, from a very vicious outside World. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!"

Trump accompanied this with a video of what appeared to be a Greenlandic man wearing a MAGA hat, who told the woman filming him he hoped America would purchase the island from Denmark.

"Buy us!" he said. "We don't want to be colonized by Danish government anymore ... Denmark is using us too much. I love America."

The Kingdom of Denmark formally owns Greenland, the world's largest island by area but home to just over 50,000 people, largely of indigenous ancestry, in a small handful of settlements along the frigid coasts. In recent decades, Denmark has gradually given the island greater autonomy over its affairs.

Trump's focus on purchasing Greenland is not the first time the idea has come up; various such proposals have been floated since the 19th century, as Greenland holds a number of natural resources and has served as a critical location for U.S. military operations for decades under agreements with Denmark.

However, Denmark has repeatedly said it is not interested in selling Greenland to the United States, and more recently has boosted defense spending in the region.

This also comes as Trump escalates his public vision of turning Canada into a U.S. state, which he has suggested is the only way Canada can seek relief from his planned tariffs.
