A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck western China near Nepal, killing over 50 people. This is one of the deadliest earthquakes in recent years. Major past earthquakes in China include the Sichuan quake in 2008, and other significant tremors in Yunnan, Gansu, and Qinghai provinces. The Tibetan Plateau remains a highly seismically active region.
