Spurs have endured a challenging season so far

Tottenham Hotspur have had a real rollercoaster of a season so far, with moments of brilliance punctuated by spells of disappointment that have left fans unsure of what to expect next.

Under the guidance of Ange Postecoglou, the club began the season with a renewed sense of optimism, and their attacking play, when at its best, has been a joy to behold; however, this promise has often been undermined by defensive frailties and an alarming inconsistency in their results.

Currently, Tottenham find themselves in 12th place in the Premier League table, a staggering 11 points behind fifth-placed Newcastle United and 12 adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea.

Such a gap, though not insurmountable, illustrates the scale of the challenge they face in their quest to return to European competition next season.

Richards and Lineker weigh in on Tottenham’s prospects

Micah Richards and Gary Lineker, speaking on The Rest is Football podcast alongside Alan Shearer, have offered their insights into Tottenham Hotspur’s potential finish this season, providing a balanced yet hopeful perspective for fans of the North London club.

Acknowledging the difficulties posed by injuries and fluctuating form, both pundits were cautiously optimistic about Spurs’ ability to secure a European spot by the end of the campaign.

Micah Richards began by saying: “I think with Forest doing so well and Newcastle picking up form, Aston Villa picking up form as well, all those teams probably didn’t expect to be there,”

“And we thought Spurs would be in that situation so yeah, probably just Europe maybe.

Lineker added: “I still think they’ll make Europe if as long as they can get one or two players back.

“You only need – like Newcastle, if you put three, four wins together you’d really jump at the moment because it’s quite tight, isn’t it, that pack behind the top four.”

Where do Tottenham need to finish to secure European football

The Premier League’s qualification spots for European competitions add an additional layer of intrigue to Tottenham’s situation.

While the top four guarantee Champions League football, there is a possibility of a fifth spot being available this season, which would further incentivise teams like Spurs to fight until the very end.

Meanwhile, the highest-placed team outside the Champions League positions can secure Europa League qualification, with the FA Cup and Carabao Cup winners deciding the remaining slots for Europe.

Richards, reflecting on Tottenham’s prospects beyond this season, provided a note of encouragement regarding the club’s youthful squad.

“I think next season – or the next half of the first season – I think they’ll be better,” he predicted. “Because even the younger players who are playing now are getting a little bit more experience.”

His optimism about the club’s long-term trajectory resonates with the hope that Ange Postecoglou’s project will bear fruit once the team settles into a rhythm.
