PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — This awards season, a Portland-made sci-fi comedy could go home with its first major trophy.

“It’s What’s Inside” has been nominated as the Best Movie Made For Television at the 30th annual Critics Choice Awards. The film, which had its streaming debut on Netflix last October, follows a group of college friends who use a body-swapping machine while at a pre-wedding party.

Greg Jardin, whose resumé includes promos for popular Netflix titles “Wednesday” and “When They See Us,” directed the thriller. He told IndieWire that his latest release was mostly filmed in a Portland residence that was for sale during the time of production.

Emmy-Award-winning “Euphoria” star Colman Domingo served as an executive producer. “Fear the Walking Dead” lead Alycia Debnam-Carey, “The White Lotus” actress Brittany O’Grady and “The Sex Lives of College Girls” actor Gavin Leatherwood are among the cast.

“It’s What’s Inside” was dubbed as one of the most anticipated films ahead of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. After the movie's successful premiere last January, Netflix purchased the worldwide rights for around $17 million.

With a possible win at the Critics Choice Awards, the comedy could soar to new heights.

“The Critics Choice Awards are bestowed annually to honor the finest in cinematic and television achievement,” the Critics Choice Association said. “Historically, they are the most accurate predictor of Academy Award nominations.”

The Portland-filmed thriller was nominated alongside other popular streaming releases: Max’s “The Great Lillian Hall,” Prime Video’s Música, Disney+’s “Out of My Mind,” Netflix’s “Rebel Ridge” and Shudder’s “V/H/S Beyond.”

The winner will be announced at the awards show scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 12 at 4 p.m. Comedian Chelsea Handler will host the gala held in Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar.

Audiences can watch the event live on E! News. It will also be available for streaming on Peacock the following day.
