UN supports women entrepreneurs at Kandahar exhibition

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has announced financial support for 16 women-led businesses in Kandahar, enabling them to showcase their products in an exhibition.

In a statement released on Tuesday, January 7, the IOM highlighted that these entrepreneurs displayed and sold their products at a trade exhibition in Kandahar.

According to the organization, approximately 5,000 visitors attended the exhibition daily, and the IOM provided support to 70 businesses in Kandahar.

The exhibition, aimed at promoting local products and fostering domestic production, was held from January 5 to 8, showcasing goods such as food items, vehicles, dried fruits, and carpets in 150 stalls over three days.

Previously, a UN Women representative in Afghanistan also announced support for women entrepreneurs and forcibly returned migrants from Pakistan and Iran in Kandahar.

However, the images from the Kandahar exhibition reveal an absence of women participants, despite claims of support for women-led businesses. While the event showcased various products, it appears that women were not visibly involved in presenting or promoting their businesses, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by women entrepreneurs under current restrictions.

This comes amid increased emphasis by UN agencies and human rights organizations on empowering women economically after the ban on education and employment for women and girls in Afghanistan.

Afghan domestic products have been showcased at several national and international exhibitions this year, creating new opportunities for businesses and enhancing market visibility.

Initiatives like the Kandahar exhibition underline the importance of supporting women entrepreneurs in Afghanistan. As restrictions on women persist, such platforms are crucial for fostering economic independence and resilience in challenging circumstances.
