Greggs increases price of sausage rolls by 5p for second time in six months
Pastry fans have received some bad news about the price of the beloved sausage roll.
Bakery chain Greggs has upped the price of its classic savoury pastry by 5p, meaning it now costs £1.30.
This is the second price rise in six months, when the price was increased from £1.20 to £1.25 last July.
It seems inflation is hitting us all, as the Greggs sausage roll has now increased in price by 30% since 2022, when it only cost £1.
A Greggs employee at the Shields Road branch in Newcastle said the price had gone up just after Christmas, and some regulars had complained about the increase.
But the cost of a sausage roll isn’t the only item on the menu to go up in price, with a coffee increasing from £1.60 to £1.70.
And pastry fans have had a mixed response to the price rises.
Linda Johnson, 74, a retired quality control inspector, said: ‘It’s now £3.90 for four sausage rolls. I wouldn’t pay that – I would tell them to stick it.
‘A sausage roll used to be £1, now it’s £1.30.
‘I know everyone is watching their pennies but the whole point of Greggs is that it’s cheap and cheerful.
‘I usually hand over the correct change but when I went to pay I was told that the prices had gone up.
‘I bought a coffee which is up from £1.60 to £1.70.
‘It’s still cheaper than supermarket coffee or other big brands so I will still go there.’
Heather Hife, 62, a carer, said: ‘It’s disgraceful that they have raised their prices.
‘They are a big company and are making a lot of profit. They shouldn’t be putting them up.
‘The prices already went up before. I will stop buying sausage rolls when they reach £1.50.’
Lennon Waugh, 18, a window cleaner, said: ‘I only noticed the new prices today.
‘A sausage roll is a staple. It used to be £1 but ever since it became more expensive than that I haven’t bought one.
‘It’s not worth it. £1.30 is taking the Mick. It’s not worth that.
‘Greggs is the best but not when it’s going up in price. It wouldn’t stop me coming here as I love Greggs.’
Lacey Pattirson, 17, a college student, said: ‘I thought the sausage roll was £1.20 but when I got to the till it was £1.30.
‘I wasn’t that shocked as everything has gone up.
‘It wouldn’t put me off Greggs. I would draw the line at £2 for a sausage roll.’
