Red Sox Rumors: Boston Opens Extension Talks With New Ace

The Boston Red Sox kicked off the offseason with a major rotation upgrade to acquire an emerging ace.

Boston sent four notable prospects to the Chicago White Sox to acquire left-hander Garrett Crochet. The 25-year-old posts electric stuff that brings a true No. 1 to the top of the Red Sox rotation. He has two more years of team control. That’s sparked the question of if and how Boston can ensure their new ace will be here for the long term.

That initiative appears to be on Boston’s radar as MassLive’s Chris Cotillo reported Wednesday night that the organization opened up conversations with Crochet about a potential extension. Getting that deal done, especially before the 2025 season, would be massive for the Red Sox immediately and the future.

The top starter in the rotation would be secured for a foreseeable competitive window. The team would also affirm a renewed ability to pay star players and make a financial commitment to widen a competitive window with young talent emerging from the farm system.

Crochet and Walker Buehler join Boston’s staff along with Tanner Houck, Brayan Bello, Lucas Giolito and Kutter Crawford to drive the improved Red Sox rotation in 2025.
