Report: Mets Open to Trading for Luis Arráez

The Mets are open to trading for three-time batting champion Luis Arráez, Andy Martino of SNY reported Thursday. Martino added that the Mets have yet to engage in discussions with the Padres, but they are more open to the move than the Yankees. The Mets view Arráez as a potential stopgap at first base should Pete Alonso sign elsewhere.

Arráez became the first player to win three straight batting titles with three different teams in 2024, batting .314/.346/.392 with an NL-leading 200 hits, but only hitting four homers in 672 plate appearances. While his strikeout rate dropped to a minuscule 4.3%, his 3.6% walk rate was the lowest of his career, as was his 86.1 miles per hour average exit velocity and 23.7% hard-hit rate. Arráez’s chase rate also increased to a career-worst 35.3%. His 1.1 fWAR is the second-lowest mark of his career, just ahead of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Arráez also struggled defensively, posting negative-6 OAA at first base and negative-7 OAA at second base. Arráez will make $14 million during the 2025 season.
