Third Round of US-Iran talks to begin today in Oman
The third round of U.S.-Iran talks will begin today in Oman, focusing on de-escalation and Iran’s nuclear program.
The third round of talks between the United States and Iran, aimed at de-escalating tensions and addressing Iran’s nuclear program, began today, Saturday, April 26 in Muscat, the capital of Oman.
The U.S. State Department has confirmed that Michael Anton, the Department’s Policy Planning Director, will lead the U.S. technical delegation. Anton, who previously served as a national security advisor during Donald Trump’s first term, has participated in the previous two rounds of negotiations, alongside Steve Witkoff, the U.S. Special Representative for Middle East Affairs.
On the Iranian side, Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will lead the diplomatic and technical team. According to Tasnim News Agency, Majid Takht-Ravanchi, Deputy Minister for Political Affairs, and Kazem Gharibabadi, Deputy Minister for Legal and International Affairs, are also part of Iran’s technical team.
Ahead of the talks, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed optimism, stating that the discussions with Iran were progressing “very well” and that Iran could save “billions of dollars” through an agreement.
Trump emphasized that two options were available, but only one was desirable. He also mentioned that in the absence of a deal, “bombing” Iran was a possibility, though he preferred a diplomatic solution.
The third round of negotiations will begin with technical discussions, which will then evolve into high-level talks led by Araghchi and Witkoff. According to BBC reports, the Omani Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the negotiations have “accelerated,” and both sides have agreed to move to the next stage in order to reach a “fair, sustainable, and binding” agreement.
China and Russia, Iran’s allies, have expressed support for the negotiations. The Kremlin has stated that the talks could reduce tensions, and China has urged the U.S. to be “sincere” in the discussions. Rafael Grossi, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), who recently met with representatives from Iran, China, and Russia, also hopes for a swift agreement between Iran and the U.S.
