DAD FATALLY REVERSES CAR OVER TODDLER: 6-year-old injured in separate horror crash near Mbokodo

A HEART-BREAKING tragedy rocked Kensington, Bulawayo, when a father accidentally ran over his 2-year-old daughter while reversing out of his yard, killing her on the spot.

The horrific incident occurred on 20 June 2025 around 8:43AM. The 55-year-old man from Hendricourt, Kensington, was reversing his Toyota Hilux Double Cab as he prepared to leave his home. As he moved forward, tragedy struck when the front left side of the vehicle hit the toddler and the front wheel ran over her.

Bulawayo’s police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said the child sustained head injuries and died instantly.

The accident was caused by the driver’s failure to keep a proper lookout, according to Insp Msebele.

Later that afternoon at 3PM, another Toyota Hilux was involved in a terrifying head-on collision along Bulawayo-Plumtree Road near Mbokodo Abattoir after a 6-year-old girl dashed into traffic.

A South Africa-based motorist, aged 53, was driving south when he spotted the child in the middle of the lane. In a desperate bid to avoid hitting her, he swerved into the north-bound lane, colliding head-on with another Hilux driven by a 45-year-old man from Mpopoma.

The child, shocked by the incident, fell and sustained bruises on the forehead. She was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital for treatment. Fortunately, no one from the two vehicles was injured.

In the wake of the accidents, police have issued a stern warning to drivers and guardians.
“We urge motorists to always check around and underneath their vehicles before moving, especially in residential areas. Parents must monitor their children closely and never allow them to cross roads alone,” said Insp Msebele.
