Man United legend’s son makes U18 debut — but unstoppable 17-year-old steals the show in win over Newcastle
Manchester United U18s made it back-to-back victories in the U18 Premier League North, beating Newcastle United 3-0 at Carrington on Saturday afternoon.
After a five-game winless streak, United returned to winning ways last weekend with a dominant 7-0 triumph at Liverpool and followed it up with a brilliant display at home.
Jacey Carrick, the son of Man United legend Michael Carrick, made his debut for the U18s in the encounter.
However, 17-year-old Godwill Kukonki stole the spotlight, capping it off with two assists.
The young Reds dominated the first half but failed to beat George Mair in the Newcastle goal.
The first United chance saw Jim Thwaites’ curling shot parried away by Mair, before the Newcastle goalkeeper saved Nathaniel Brown’s effort.
Brown was also involved in United’s next chance, picking out Jariyah Shah, whose volley was kept out by the impressive Mair.
The 16-year-old goalkeeper then made two consecutive saves to deny JJ Gabriel and Louie Bradbury.
Gabriel was denied again by Mair after getting teed up by Godwill Kukonki.
The last chance before the break saw Yuel Helafu take advantage of space in the Magpies’ defensive line, but his effort dragged wide.
United continued their dominance after the break and eventually broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute.
Kukonki showed a good piece of skill to evade his markers, then aimed towards goal, but his effort was parried by Mair. The ball fell kindly to Douka Nkoto, who turned the ball home at the far post.
Nkoto doubled Man United’s lead just before the hour mark with a simple tap-in, after Kukonki won the first touch from Thwaites’ free-kick.
Kukonki almost got rewarded for his brilliant display, dribbling past three defenders, before aiming for the far post, but his effort drifted wide.
Then came the moment for Carrick to make his United U18 debut, replacing Gabriel in the 70th minute.
Noah Ajayi made it 3-0 with a low drive after Nkoto intercepted a poor pass inside the area.
The victory keeps United second in the table, four points behind defending champions Manchester City, who still have two games in hand.
