JJ Gabriel shines on Old Trafford debut, sets new FA Youth Cup milestone

Manchester United U18s began their FA Youth Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over Peterborough United at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening.

Coach Darren Fletcher named JJ Gabriel in the starting line-up, and he has now become the youngest-ever player to represent Man United in the competition, since records began in the 2006/2007 season.

United nearly got off to a dream start, as Bendito Mantato pounced on a heavy touch to square the ball to Louie Bradbury, who disappointedly fired wide.

The young Reds continued to control the proceedings and were rewarded for their dominance in the 22nd minute.

Mantato won the ball high up the pitch, fed it to Jariyah Shah, who turned away from his marker to find Nathaniel Junior Brown, whose one touch set up Gabriel for the finish.

United pushed to extend their lead before the break. Their biggest opportunity to score was when Shah’s effort was saved by goalkeeper Ben Westcott.

Peterborough began the second half with a better attacking intent and were awarded a free kick early on, which Luca Christoudias skied.

The next chance fell to United, as Mantato cut inside from the right, before smashing a left-footed shot over the crossbar.

Mantato then saw his effort saved by Westcott, who also reacted well to keep out the rebound.

At the other end, Cameron Byrne-Hughes made two good saves to preserve United’s lead. He thwarted Patryk Sykut’s drive before smothering Eddie Fox’s volley.

His saves proved decisive as United were unable to add to their one-goal lead before the final whistle.

The result sees Fletcher’s side qualify for the fourth round, where they will face either Derby County or Cambridge United.
