Trump Administration to Lead International Forces in Gaza

The U.S. plans to appoint a general to command international stabilization forces in Gaza, overseeing security and reconstruction amid ongoing ceasefire negotiations.

The Trump administration plans to appoint a U.S. Army general to lead international stabilization forces in the Gaza Strip, Axios reported. The general, described as a “two-star” officer, would oversee security operations in the region.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, recently informed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials that Washington intends to place an American general at the head of the force. Waltz described the officer as “highly serious” and capable, reassuring Israel that the mission would meet proper operational standards.

Speculation has grown regarding the Trump peace plan and the second phase of a Gaza ceasefire. While some Hamas officials have expressed reluctance to continue governing Gaza, senior leader Khaled Meshaal stated that the group would neither disarm nor accept foreign oversight.

Axios noted that assigning a U.S. general would increase Washington’s responsibility for Gaza’s security and reconstruction, a project described as the largest U.S. political and military initiative in the Middle East in over two decades. Germany and Italy have reportedly been invited to join the peace delegation.

The second ceasefire phase is expected to include further Israeli troop withdrawals, deployment of international forces, and establishment of a new governance structure led by a Trump-led peace delegation. President Trump announced plans to introduce the delegation in early 2026.

U.S. officials have emphasized that no American ground troops will be deployed in Gaza. A draft UN Security Council resolution submitted by the U.S. proposes that an international force maintain security in the enclave, potentially through the end of 2027.

Observers say the plan represents a significant expansion of U.S. involvement in Gaza, balancing diplomatic, civilian, and military responsibilities while navigating complex regional politics.
