The mayor of Lawrence, Massachusetts, Brian DePeña, is under fire after a video of a hearing was shared on social media.

DePeña was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and came to the U.S. in the 1980s.  Despite being in America for almost 40 years, DePeñas needed a translator during the hearing.

DePeña was in court on December 19th for a hearing on the revocation of former Acting Police Chief William Castro’s certification due to a misleading report.

MassNewsDaily reports, “The judge overseeing the hearing refused to allow the mayor’s personal assistant to act as his translator, citing a serious concern: anything said through a private translator could not be independently verified.”

“Neither the judge nor opposing counsel speaks Spanish, meaning mistranslations — intentional or not — could influence testimony, sway responses, or distort the official record with no way to confirm accuracy.”

In March, President Trump signed an executive order to designate English as the official language of the United States.

The order, “Designating English as the Official Language of the United States,” is self-explanatory.

“From the founding of our Republic, English has been used as our national language.  Our Nation’s historic governing documents, including the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, have all been written in English,” the order reads.

“It is therefore long past time that English is declared as the official language of the United States.  A nationally designated language is at the core of a unified and cohesive society, and the United States is strengthened by a citizenry that can freely exchange ideas in one shared language.”
