Winter Storm Warning Announced for 4 States as 10 Inches of Snow Expected, Including New York City

It might not have been a white Christmas for most parts of the country, but some heavy snow is coming about a day later for four states, the National Weather Service (NWS) has warned.

On Thursday, the NWS issued a winter weather warning that is expected to bring some heavy snow to parts of four states in the northeast United States, including the New York City area.

Obviously, this could make driving difficult for travelers amid the holiday season, so the NWS is urging travelers to be extra cautious.

Snow in Four Different States

In a post on X on Thursday, prominent meteorologist Max Velocity shared a weather map predicting what he described as a "bunch of snow" for parts of New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

"A BUNCH OF SNOW is going to hit New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Connecticut tomorrow! Widespread 5-10" of snow is on the table. New York City could even see near 10" of snow!" Max Velocity wrote in a post X.

The map shows the heaviest snow in eastern Pennsylvania, southwestern New Jersey, southwestern Connecticut, and southeastern New York, including Manhattan. Areas of Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire are projected to get isolated, lighter amounts of snow.

NWS Issues Warning

As this potentially heavy snow moves in, the NWS has issued a winter storm warning for New York and Pennsylvania from 4 p.m. on Friday until 1 p.m. on Saturday.

"Moderate to heavy snow will develop around or just after sunset Friday, and will remain heavy at times Friday night. Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour will be possible Friday evening. The snow gradually tapers off Saturday morning," the NWS warned in its winter storm warning.

The NWS warned that the winter weather could lead to "hazardous" traveling conditions, especially for those commuting to work on Friday.

"Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Travel could be difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday evening commute," the NWS wrote.

The NWS urged to avoid travel if at all possible, but warned to prepare accordingly if travel is required.

"If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency," the NWS wrote.
