Pundit highlights ‘outrageous’ Liverpool detail that defined Wolves result

Liverpool beat Wolves at Anfield to make it three Premier League wins in a row and move into the top four, and one moment caught the eye.

Former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison made that clear while analysing the game, speaking on Soccer Saturday on X.

“Wirtz scores, but let me tell you, the skill before that,” he said. “They have a player, by the way, in Ekitike. Ekitike is outrageous.”

“He just flicks it round the corner, gets it the other side, cuts inside, and I was thinking, go and have a shot,” Morrison added. “So you know what he does, he slides in Wirtz… but that’s all about Ekitike.”

Ekitike influence shows Liverpool evolution under Slot

Hugo Ekitike’s role in that move summed up why we’re starting to see a clearer attacking identity again.

The 23-year-old Frenchman, signed from Eintracht Frankfurt for an initial £69m, resisted the obvious option to shoot and instead trusted the movement of Florian Wirtz.

Wirtz finished calmly for his first Liverpool goal, but the entire sequence showed the understanding developing between two major summer additions.

BBC Sport noted how the German “played a stunning first-half through ball to Ekitike” earlier in the game too, with the pair combining repeatedly before half-time.

With Alexander Isak sidelined through injury, there is added pressure on our No.22 to carry the line, link play and stay fit, and this was one of his most complete displays in a red shirt so far.

It also came on a day when John Aldridge questioned our game management after going 2-0 up, highlighting that Liverpool still have improvements to make despite results.

Ekitike’s contribution wasn’t just technical.

He led the press, dropped into pockets and created space for runners, even if he visibly tired late on as Wolves pushed.

We are asking a lot of the former Bundesliga forward at this stage of the season, and yet moments like this show why the coaching staff trust him.

There were positives elsewhere too.

Milos Kerkez continued his upward trend at left-back, combining defensive aggression with an attacking outlet, while Wirtz’s confidence visibly grew as the afternoon progressed.

Liverpool may not yet be operating at full throttle, but the pieces are starting to align.

And as Morrison put it, sometimes the most important moment isn’t the goal, but the decision just before it.
