How To See In The New Year With Elderly Relatives

With many of us opting for a quiet Christmas this year, chances are that we’ll be extending these restful vibes to the New Year and who better to enjoy that with than elderly relatives?

Yes, it’s not quite the dazzling lights and glitter of New Year in the city and chances are, you won’t be getting blitzed in front of them the way you normally would but there is a lot to be said for entering next year feeling calm, rested and loved.

So, what can you do with your elderly loved ones this year?

A film night

Home care experts Helping Hands say on their website: “Having a senior member of the family choose a film, and then the kids (big or small) choose one they love, means that everyone feels valued and opens up the chance of discovering a new favourite.

“Providing choices that are suitable for the age group of everyone gathered can be a great way to bond over a shared love of films that will forever remind them of each other.”

Indulge in old traditions

The senior wellness experts at BeyondWell Home Care say: “Over the years, your loved one may have developed a few traditions based on the New Year. For instance, some people enjoy eating twelve grapes at midnight, while others eat black-eyed peas for good luck.

“Find out your loved one’s favorite tradition, and make sure he or she has every item necessary to make it happen.”

 Nostalgic trivia night

12 Oaks Senior Living say: “Host a trivia game, but skip the modern pop culture.

“Focus on history and nostalgia: “Who sang ‘Auld Lang Syne’ in 1955?” or “What was the price of gas in 1960?” When seniors know the answers, it boosts confidence and dopamine.”

You’ll probably learn a lot, too!

Do a daytime celebration

Some elderly people sleep a lot earlier and won’t make it to the famous midnight bells. Care Finders advise doing things a little earlier, saying: ”

For seniors who are more energetic earlier in the day, plan a New Year’s luncheon or afternoon tea. Decorate the table with festive items like party hats and noisemakers to add to the holiday spirit.

“Include activities like sharing favourite memories from the year or setting lighthearted resolutions for the next one.”

Happy new year!
