Chimwendo Banda Spends First Night at Maula Prison

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda spent his first night at Maula Prison after being discharged from a hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for the past two weeks.

Chimwendo Banda fell ill while in police custody and was admitted to a hospital for medical care.

Hospital doctors indicated he was fit to leave the facility.

However, his lawyer, George Jivason Kadzipatike, stated that Chimwendo Banda is not fully recovered and requires further medical attention, noting that doctors recommended an additional day of treatment before he could fully resume normal activities.

Chimwendo Banda remains in custody as he awaits the ruling on his bail application.

Judge Mzonde Mvula has not yet set a date for the judgment.

The MCP secretary general is facing charges of attempted murder alongside co-accused Alfred Dala Kadula, relating to an alleged attempt to cause the death of Frank Chawanda in Dowa District.

Kadula is also facing multiple other charges.
Legal representatives had previously raised concerns over Chimwendo Banda’s health, citing a spinal condition that required urgent medical care while he was in police custody.

Authorities have confirmed that he will continue receiving medical treatment while in prison as required.
