Daniel Levy breaks silence on Tottenham exit as former chairman receives CBE honour
Daniel Levy has spoken publicly for the first time since leaving Tottenham Hotspur, reflecting on his time at the club and the wider impact of his work following recent recognition in the United Kingdom’s New Year Honours list.
Tottenham Hotspur have since moved on from former chairman Daniel Levy, who was at the helm in north London for 24 years.
The former chairman’s on-pitch decisions were not always met with praise by Tottenham supporters, but it is his off-the-field work that continues to earn him recognition.
During his time in north London, Levy carried out significant work within the local community, setting up the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation – the club’s official charitable body – in 2006.
He also opened the state-of-the-art Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in April 2019, a ground that has now been the club’s home for almost seven years, bringing jobs and economic activity to the area.
Daniel Levy awarded CBE after Tottenham exit
In recognition of that work, The Athletic have reported that Daniel Levy has now been awarded a CBE in the United Kingdom’s New Year Honours list.
The CBE, which stands for Commander of the Order of the British Empire, is awarded to individuals in recognition of their contribution to public life in the United Kingdom and ranks above both an OBE and an MBE.
Speaking after receiving the honour, Levy reflected on the collective effort behind the work carried out during his time at the club, while acknowledging the role of those around him.
He said: “The positive change we were able to achieve would not have been possible without the passion, dedication and hard work of so many people at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, together with our community partners, who shared a belief in the power of sport to transform lives.”
Levy reflects on Tottenham Hotspur legacy
Levy also used the opportunity to speak more broadly about what Tottenham Hotspur has meant to him personally, and the importance he placed on the club’s role within the local community during his tenure.
Expanding on his legacy and the impact he hoped the club would leave behind, Levy said: “Tottenham Hotspur has always been more than a football club to me.
“It is part of the fabric of the local community, and I am immensely proud of the role we have played in helping to regenerate the area through our initiatives in education, employment, health and social inclusion.
“While our stadium development and on-pitch results often took the headlines, I hope that my legacy will be the positive and lasting impact we have made on the lives of people in Tottenham and beyond.
“Football clubs have a unique role to play in their local community and at Tottenham Hotspur we always took this responsibility very seriously.”
