Outgoing NYC mayor planted a Trump-themed time bomb that may be impossible to undo: report

Outgoing mayor of New York City Eric Adams may have planted a Trump-themed time bomb that could be almost impossible for newly elected mayor Zohran Mamdani to undo, according to a new report.

The New York Post reported on Tuesday, citing "sources" and "insiders," that Adam is planning to "hand-pick" another independent Charter Revision Commission to redo the way New York's primary races are conducted and has plans to end the city's sanctuary status.

Appointing a new Charter Revision Commission is a way for Adams to maintain some influence on Mamdani's administration, the report suggests. Members have the authority to make changes to the city's charter as they see fit, although any changes must be approved by a public vote before they take effect.

“As a one-term mayor, Eric Adams has nothing left to protect,” one insider told the outlet. “He hates the system and is going scorched earth, including taking shots at Zohran Mamdani on the way out, and we’re all here for it.”

One change Adams could ask the commission to review is New York's sanctuary city laws, which do not align with the Trump administration's stance on immigration.

Adams has ingratiated himself with Trump throughout the president's second administration. Trump got the Department of Justice to quietly end a corruption investigation into Adams in early 2025, a move that Adams followed up by saying he would cooperate with Trump's questionable immigration policies.
