WATCH: Deepti Sharma creates new WORLD RECORD in India’s 5-0 whitewash of Sri Lanka in T20I series

Harmanpreet Kaur’s Team India created history, completing only their third 5-0 whitewash in a T20I series in their history. Before blanking Sri Lanka Women team on Tuesday, Indians had won 5-0 against West Indies in 2019 and against Bangladesh in 2024.

There was more good news for the Indian women cricket team before the New Year as all-rounder Deepti Sharma became the highest wicket-taker in the history of T20I cricketer, claiming her record 152nd scalp in the fifth and final game at the Greenfields Cricket Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday.

The UP Warriorz all-rounder dismissed Sri Lanka’s Nilakshika Silva in the 14th over of their chase to surpass Australia’s Megan Schutt, who has 151 wickets in T20I format. Pakistan’s Nida Dar is the third highest wicket-taker in T20 cricket with 144 wickets in 152 matches.

Indian spinner Radha Yadav is the second-best Indian bowler after Deepti Sharma with 103 wickets in 86 matches. Radha and Deepti are the only two Indian bowlers with more than 100 T20I wickets on the list.

It was the only wicket that Deepti claimed in the match as the home side defeated Sri Lanka by 15 runs in the fifth T20I. Chasing 176 to win, the visitors were restricted to 160 for 7 in spite of half-centuries by Hasini Perera (65 off 42 balls) and Imesha Dulani (50 off 39 balls).

For the Indians, all their six bowlers including Deepti Sharma claimed a wicket each. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur top-scored for the Indians with 68 off 43 balls powering them to 175 for 7 after slipping to 77 for 5 at one stage.

“2025 has been great for us. All the hard work we have done, this year we have got the credit. It’s about repeating these habits. All of us have played a lot of T20 cricket together. It was about believing we can do that. Everyone was happy and we wanted to set that standards. Going forward, we want to look at this series and think of what we can do ahead,” Harmanpreet said in the post-match presentation.

“As a batter, it’s my responsibility to give strength to that order and contribute. Shifting to T20 from ODI wasn’t easy but everyone was excited to play. We fought for this and happy how all things came together. Next is WPL which is important for all of us. Hopefully we play our best cricket and enjoy ourselves. Next six months are important, we want to keep working hard and raising the bar,” the Indian skipper added.

Last week, Deepti had become the first-ever cricketer across the men’s and women’s game to record 1,000 runs and 150 wickets in T20 International cricket. Currently ranked No. 1 in the ICC Women’s T20I all-rounder rankings, Deepti has turned out in 133 T20Is for India and was named player of the tournament at the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, where India lifted their maiden title on home soil.

Deepti was also one of the biggest buys in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 mega auction, being bought back by UP Warriorz for Rs 3.2 crore – the second-highest bid ever in the history of the T20 league.
