Tesla loses top EV spot to Chinese rival BYD
Tesla lost its position as the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer in 2025, after annual deliveries declined for a second consecutive year and were overtaken by China’s BYD.
The US-based company delivered 1.64 million vehicles during the year, according to figures released on Friday. That marked a drop of about nine percent from 2024. By contrast, BYD sold 2.26 million electric vehicles, securing the top global position for the first time.
The change ends more than a decade of Tesla dominance in global electric car sales.
