Bombshell update: Manchester United sack manager Ruben Amorim
Manchester United have reportedly taken the dramatic decision to sack manager Ruben Amorim, according to a bombshell revelation from The Athletic.
Club legend Darren Fletcher, currently in charge of the Under-18s, is set to step into the hot seat as interim manager.
The stunning development is sure to divide opinion among supporters, sparking shock, frustration and intrigue in equal measure.
Amorim had only arrived at Old Trafford in November 2024, succeeding Erik ten Hag after a run of damaging results forced the Dutchman out.
United paid a hefty £9.25 million compensation fee to prise the highly rated coach away from Sporting Lisbon.
The report further reveals that United will have to pay out Amorim’s contract in full, which was set to run until 2027.
The Portuguese coach oversaw 63 matches at the helm but managed just 25 wins, a return that ultimately proved unacceptable.
His tenure also included 23 defeats, most notably the humiliating 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the 2025 Europa League final.
United spent more than £200m on new signings during the 2025 summer transfer window but the results did not improve on the pitch.
United decided to axe him after his explosive comments about the board in a press conference last evening.
United are not expected to appoint a permanent successor before the end of the season.
Questions must be asked of INEOS, the co-owners of the club, who took this drastic step because of a press conference.
All the blame cannot fall on Amorim alone, and the board members must start taking responsibility for their poor decisions and fragile egos.
