Pakistan Seizes Two Tonnes of Explosives in Karachi, Foils Major Attack Plot

Pakistani security forces seized nearly 2,000 kilograms of explosives from a truck in Karachi, thwarting suspected plans for large-scale militant attacks.

Pakistani security forces said they seized nearly 2,000 kilograms of explosives from a cargo truck in Karachi, foiling what authorities described as plans for large-scale attacks across the city.

Police said the explosives were discovered during an operation in the Raees Goth area and were being transported to target key and sensitive locations in Pakistan’s largest metropolis.

Officials said the seizure was part of a broader crackdown on the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a militant group blamed for attacks on security forces and infrastructure in recent years.

No arrests were immediately announced, but police said investigations were under way to trace the supply network and identify those involved in planning the attacks.

Karachi, Pakistan’s financial hub and home to more than 20 million people, has long been a prime target for militant groups because of its economic importance and dense population.

Security analysts say militant networks often use commercial vehicles to move explosives discreetly, exploiting weak monitoring on highways linking Karachi to other parts of the country.

Pakistani authorities have repeatedly warned that militant violence has risen since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan, a claim Kabul denies, saying they do not allow their territory to be used against neighbours.

According to the Pakistan Institute for Peace Studies, terror attacks in Pakistan rose 34% in 2025, with around 700 incidents killing more than 1,000 people, underscoring persistent security challenges.
