Trump to Meet Venezuelan Opposition Leader Maria Corina Machado Next Week
U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to meet Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado next week, praising her Nobel Peace Prize and political efforts.
U.S. President Donald Trump said he will meet next week with Maria Corina Machado, Venezuela’s main opposition leader and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, welcoming her proposal to dedicate her prize to him.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump said Machado is expected to arrive next week, adding that he looks forward to greeting her and discussing the situation in Venezuela.
Trump has previously questioned Machado’s political strength, saying it would be difficult for her to lead because she lacks sufficient support and respect inside Venezuela, despite describing her as a “very nice woman.”
Machado, the leading figure of Venezuela’s opposition, has pledged to return to her country soon and praised Trump for toppling her rival Nicolas Maduro, saying her movement is ready to win a free election.
Venezuela has been locked in a prolonged political crisis, with power struggles between the ruling establishment and opposition figures backed by parts of the international community.
The United States has played a central role in shaping Venezuela policy through sanctions, diplomatic pressure and shifting engagement strategies over successive administrations.
Reuters has reported that Trump currently appears more inclined to cooperate with interim President Delcy Rodriguez and senior officials linked to Maduro’s government.
The contrasting signals have raised questions about Washington’s long-term approach, as analysts warn that mixed messages could complicate efforts to resolve Venezuela’s political standoff.
