Afghanistan futsal team ends Iran training camp amid protests

Afghanistan’s national futsal team ended its training camp in Iran and returned home as growing protests disrupted preparations for upcoming Asian Cup matches.

Afghanistan’s national futsal team has ended its training camp in the Iranian city of Mashhad and returned home amid expanding protests across Iran.

Team officials said on Monday that the players entered Afghanistan via the land route into Herat and are expected to travel onward to Kabul.

The squad had been holding the camp in Mashhad as part of preparations for the upcoming AFC Futsal Asian Cup.

Iran has experienced periodic waves of protests in recent years, with demonstrations often leading to security disruptions in several major cities, including Mashhad.

Regional instability has frequently affected the training and travel schedules of Afghanistan sports teams, which often rely on neighbouring countries for camps due to limited domestic facilities.

Officials said the team will now adjust its preparations and is scheduled to travel to Vietnam in the coming days for a new training camp and two friendly matches.

The Vietnam tour is seen as crucial for maintaining match fitness and tactical readiness ahead of continental competition. Despite the disruption, team sources said the coaching staff remains confident the revised programme will keep Afghanistan on track for the Asian Cup.
