China urges Iran to maintain stability amid ongoing protests

China said it supports Iran’s efforts to maintain stability, opposing U.S. threats, sanctions and tariff pressure amid ongoing protests and rising regional tensions.

China said on Wednesday it hopes Iran can maintain stability amid ongoing protests, stressing Beijing’s support for Tehran as unrest and international pressure continue to mount.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told a regular news briefing that China supports Iran’s efforts to safeguard stability, adding that Beijing opposes interference in the internal affairs of other countries.

Responding to threats by U.S. President Donald Trump, Lin said China consistently opposes the use or threat of force in international relations and rejects external pressure on sovereign states.

He also expressed hope that all parties would act in ways that contribute to peace and stability in the Middle East, warning that escalating tensions could have wider regional consequences.

Commenting on Trump’s proposal to impose tariffs on countries trading with Iran, Lin said tariff wars have no winners and pledged that China would firmly protect its legitimate and lawful interests.

Trump has warned that any country maintaining trade relations with Iran could face a 25% tariff on commerce with the United States, a move that could significantly affect China, one of Iran’s key trading partners.

China and Iran maintain close economic ties, particularly in energy and infrastructure, and Beijing has repeatedly criticized unilateral sanctions as destabilizing and counterproductive.

As tensions rise over Iran’s internal unrest and external pressure intensifies, analysts say China’s stance reflects its broader opposition to coercive diplomacy and its efforts to safeguard strategic and economic interests in the region.
