Man remanded for eight days over attempted murder
A 33-year-old man was remanded in custody for eight days by the Larnaca district court on Monday for the attempted murder of another man in Tersefanou.
The suspect faces charges of attempted murder, acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, burglary, assault and psychological harassment.
Police said they were alerted at around 7.15am by a 46-year-old woman, who reported that a man had entered the apartment through an unlocked balcony door while she and her partner were inside.
According to the complaint, the suspect initially assaulted the 40-year-old and then went to the kitchen, where he armed himself with a cleaver.
He allegedly attacked the victim repeatedly, causing severe injuries.
The 40-year-old attempted to flee via the balcony but was caught by the assailant.
The suspect is also accused of attacking the victim’s partner and threatening her life.
She managed to escape and ran to the building’s parking area, where she was found by police officers who had responded to a call.
The suspect fled before officers arrived.
The injured man was taken to Larnaca general hospital, where doctors found his left thumb had been cut off in addition to the partial amputation of his right thumb and index finger, multiple fractures to his hands and head, and a fracture to his back.
Due to the seriousness of his condition, he was transferred to Nicosia general hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.
The case appears to be linked to personal disputes, with the suspect allegedly acting out of jealousy over his ex-wife’s relationship with the victim.
