China urged its citizens to avoid travel to Afghanistan after a deadly explosion hit a Chinese restaurant in central Kabul.

China’s embassy in Kabul on Monday warned that Afghanistan’s security situation remains fragile following a deadly restaurant explosion in the capital.

In a statement, the embassy again urged Chinese citizens to temporarily refrain from traveling to Afghanistan and remain vigilant if already there. Attacks targeting foreign nationals have increased since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, raising concerns among diplomats and investors.

Chinese interests in Afghanistan, including infrastructure and mining projects, have faced repeated security threats despite Taliban assurances of protection.

The embassy advised Chinese companies and residents in Afghanistan to strictly follow local regulations and enhance personal security measures.

It also urged citizens to avoid crowded places, religious sites, and restaurants, citing heightened risks of militant attacks. The warning followed Monday’s explosion at a Chinese restaurant in Kabul’s Shahr-e-Naw area, killing seven people and wounding about 17 others.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, which killed one Chinese national and six Afghans, echoing similar assaults in recent years.

The attack underscores ongoing security challenges in Afghanistan and highlights the persistent threat posed by Islamic State to foreign nationals and interests.
