‘The power of subpoena’: Here’s Democrats’ latest extremist impeachment plan

Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell of California said on CNN Thursday that Democrats need to “impeach the tariffs” that President Donald Trump has imposed.

Trump’s most recent use of tariffs came Saturday, when he announced his intention to levy a 10% tariff on multiple European countries who opposed his proposal to purchase Greenland from Denmark. Swalwell claimed Trump failed to address affordability.

“Congressman, you have said that impeachment should be on the table if Democrats win back the House in the midterm elections, looking like an increasingly likely possibility. What has the president done so far that you think is an impeachable offense?” CNN host Kacie Hunt asked Swalwell, who is running for governor of California.

“Well, let me just say this. I think we should impeach the tariffs. That has to be the day one priority,” Swalwell told Hunt. “The president said he was going to lower costs on day one. He‘s zero for 370, and we have to, as Democrats, make sure the country understands that this guy costs too much. Literally, he costs too much in what we’re paying for groceries and figuratively, he costs too much in the rights we’re losing when women are being shot three times in the face by his ICE agents.”

Swalwell previously floated impeaching Trump administration officials, singling out Attorney General Pam Bondi, over how she handled the release of the Epstein files. Hunt asked what Swalwell meant about impeachment, reminding him that tariffs were policy.

“What I’m saying is when we have the power of subpoena and we have oversight ability, we have to bring in everybody in this administration who has led the terrorizing of immigrants, who has cashed in on this president who has made over $1 billion in his first year,” Swalwell said.

Swalwell pledged to take punitive measures against people working for United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) if he is elected governor, including denying them driver’s licenses and also promising to make previous employment with ICE a disqualification to working for the state government.

Swalwell was accused of misconduct over an alleged affair with Christine Fang, who reportedly worked with Communist China’s Ministry of State Security. He denied wrongdoing, but on Jan. 24, 2023, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy removed him from the House Intelligence Committee due to these allegations.
