San Francisco 49ers Icon John Brodie Dies at 90
The Associated Press reported on John Brodie's death and the life that made him an icon. The former NFL superstar's family has confirmed that he died at age 90 on Friday, January 23, 2026. Following his passing, 49ers co-chairman Dr. John York released a statement praising Brodie and offering condolences to his loved ones.
“The 49ers family is saddened to learn of the passing of one of the franchise’s all-time great players, John Brodie. As a kid, my 49ers fandom began by watching John play quarterback on television. He displayed an incredible commitment toward his teammates, and his support of the organization never wavered after his playing days. John became a dear friend of mine, and he will always be remembered as an important part of 49ers history. We express our deepest condolences to his wife, Sue, and the entire Brodie family.”
Brodie suffered a stroke on Oct. 24, 2000, as a January 2004 SFGate article detailed. He lived for more than 25 years after that and worked tirelessly to recover as much as he could. While discussing her husband's resilience during his recovery battle, Sue Brodie, stated that he should have died. "There is no way he should have survived." Born on August 14, 1935, in San Francisco, Brodie was married for almost 69 years, and the couple had five children together, daughters Kelly, Cammie, Diane, Erin, and son Billy.
John Brodie's Legendary Career in Football and Beyond
The AP detailed what made Brodie's career so special, including that he spent all 17 years of his NFL tenure with the San Francisco 49ers and that he won the MVP award in 1970. He also led the league in passing yards three times and touchdown passes twice, while setting numerous franchise records.
While he accomplished more in football than most players can even dream of, Brodie went on to start a new chapter in his professional life. An impressive golfer, he earned the right to play on what is now called the PGA Tour Champions (then the senior tour), and he won the Security Pacific Senior Classic in 1991. Brodie later used his expertise in a new way when he became a broadcaster for NBC, where he analyzed football and golf.
