Trump Praises British Troops After Backlash Over NATO Remarks on Afghanistan

U.S. President Donald Trump praised British soldiers as exceptionally brave, seeking to ease tensions after criticism of his comments on NATO’s role in Afghanistan.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday praised British troops, calling them among the bravest soldiers, after facing strong reactions to his remarks questioning NATO’s role in the Afghanistan war.

Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump said British forces were “great and very brave soldiers,” stressing that the bond between the U.S. and British militaries would “never be broken.”

He noted that 457 British soldiers were killed in Afghanistan and many more seriously wounded, describing the British army as unmatched in spirit, dedication, and sacrifice.

The comments followed criticism from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who described Trump’s earlier remarks about NATO forces staying away from front lines in Afghanistan as offensive and shameful.

Trump had previously told Fox News that some NATO members kept their troops behind U.S. forces in Afghanistan and questioned whether the alliance would fully defend the United States if needed.

British forces were among the largest contributors to the NATO mission in Afghanistan after the United States, playing major combat and training roles, particularly in Helmand province.

The Afghanistan war, which lasted two decades, cost hundreds of billions of dollars and thousands of lives, leaving lasting political and diplomatic sensitivities among NATO allies.

Trump’s praise of British troops appears aimed at repairing strained ties with key allies, even as debate continues over NATO’s burden-sharing and wartime roles.
