Tottenham told they only have two ‘hierarchy’ stars even close to Harry Kane
Tim Sherwood has been running the rule over the current Tottenham squad and he thinks there is a massive problem that still hasn’t been solved since Harry Kane was sold.
Tottenham are desperately trying to improve their squad this month, but with just a few days left until the transfer window closes, it’s proving difficult.
Indeed, the signings of Conor Gallagher and Souza will do very little to appease the fans if that is all the business to be done in January.
For Tim Sherwood, the issues at Spurs can be pinned on the fact that there are no real stars who can be relied upon to deliver week in, week out.
Tottenham squad does not have enough quality
Discussing the issues with OLGB, the former Tottenham manager suggested that the Lilywhites no longer have any genuine, elite talent, with only two players coming close to that bracket.
He said: “I always feel at a club, if you want to be successful, you’re going to have to have some hierarchy players, some players who you know, if they’re fit, they go straight into your team.
“I don’t see that after Son, who was in his prime probably two or three years ago, and Harry Kane. I see one player there at the moment, possibly two, Micky van de Ven and probably Cristian Romero. After that, it’s a much of a muchness.”
Many would argue that van de Ven and Cristian Romero are indeed world-class players. But whether they can actually be depended upon to deliver consistently and drag the team through the mire like Kane and Son did, is another matter.
Sherwood thinks Spurs are missing Harry Kane
Harry Kane left Spurs two-and-a-half years ago now, but can Tottenham genuinely say they have replaced him? Whether that be in terms of a top-level striker or simply a talismanic player to carry the team, the answer would surely be no.
Sherwood certainly agrees with that sentiment, adding: “It just shows you since he’s left Tottenham how much he carried that side. Him and Heung-min Son, who was fantastic as well when he was at his best. Those two carried the team into a position where it should never have been really.”
The problem is, players like James Maddison and Dominic Solanke have the potential to be that kind of player, but they are just injured far too often to consistently be the hero player Spurs need.
